Running, music, and some confessions

I was never a serious runner. I used to love the 100 m dash in school and considered myself a short distance speed-runner (Ha!). Then as usual, I grew up. I started enjoying the tipple, or two, or three, and puffing the nicotine on and off. Started working out in the gym but balanced it out with a beer for every kilo progress with the dumbbell. Eventually giving up exercises and just devoting myself to Lord Bacchus (Dionysus).

Till last year that is. Sometime in May 2013, I realised that I need to build up stamina for the upcoming trekking season. I started walking a bit and then combined walking and a bit of running. In the first couple of treks, I realised how screwed up my stamina was (Not that it has improved to the teenage-level, but somewhat significant improvement. And more so, boosted confidence!). I realised that not only should I take up running a bit seriously, but I should also be cutting down on the Bacchus potions (Easier said than done!). But then I somehow, surprisingly, stuck to chasing the breeze a bit, pushing the ground and running about. Soon the walking and running combination evolved to just running. Treks happened in between, and running continued.

One thing I would like to specifically point out was the motivation given by the Android application called Runtastic. I don't remember if it was the application that made me take up running or whether it happened after I started walking-running. Whatever the case (that eludes my memory) is, it has been motivating me throughout. I really started enjoying my run, and further enjoying the treks. Did a lot of treks last season!

Coming back to running, the course hasn't been easy. Yes I set up some goals like 5K continuous, then 10K continuous, and then average 15-18 K per week, and thankfully I was able to achieve them, but with all the sudden intensity, shin splints returned. Google helped me to realize that a lot of runners experience shin splints. Everywhere I checked people mentioned that there is no cure as such for shin splints, just try changing shoes, modify your gait, apply ice after every run, and keep doing stretches after a run. Shin splints are painful. Shins hurt not just while running, but they make every step painful if they are inflamed.

I don't remember when I switched from a random 3-4 K per day to 6K every alternate day. The rest day in between helped me contain the shin pain. I got into a good running regime and then ran the December 2013 Pune Marathon in the 10K category. (That marathon made me realize how beneficial it is to have a running partner!) Sometime back I did a continuous 10K on a weekend and then joined a Pune Running 10K event and was happy to complete it in 65 minutes.

So, after 12 months of somewhat consistency, Runtastic tells me that I have managed to do 170 km walking, 70 km hiking (haven't measure all of the hikes though), and 320 km (rounded up) running. There is a lot to do. Next up I would like to target more immediate goals like sub-60 min 10K, sub-25 min 5K, sub-30 min 6K, et al. Then a 1000 km running year. I need to pray more to the Greek God (TIL Goddess) of running now and also pray to whichever gods the Tarahumara people pray to.

Now, on to the reason that triggered this post and the second word from the title of this post.

I never tried running with music because I remembered making a mess of the headphones and the way they kept pulling out. I also got used to observing and following the rhythm and rhythmic change in my breathing during a run. I kept wondering how it will be to run with a non-falling pair of headphones and good songs. Searching for the difference between runners who run without music and runners running with music gave me some good insights on the psychology of runners and running. But then, there are times when you are bored with the usual routine and want to try out something new. So yesterday, I made a playlist of what I thought would be good songs for running and added an early-morning reminder to not forget the headphones, and today I ran while listening to music.

Yes, it was a positively good experience. I had to keep pushing the headphones back in the ear frequently, but it was all right. What need adjusting was my habit of listening to my breathing. As I mentioned earlier, I am mostly a nose breather and tend to exhale loudly thus forming rhythmic exhale sounds that change with different pace. Music distracted me from listening to my usual air-music. But then after 1-2 km I was grooving. I must tell you that Lonely Boy by The Black Keys has got a nice rhythm to it that matched my running pace brilliantly and I enjoyed that stretch quite a bit. I had added Daft Punk, Prodigy, Avicii as well, but it's The Black Keys and AC/DC that I enjoyed the most.

Music distracts you from the usual thoughts and sounds while you run, if you are used to running without music. It adds to that necessary change as well. I might not run with music every time, but I will definitely go back to running playlists once in a while.

Specially when I need some motivation to run.

On that note:

Oh, oh-oh I got a love that keeps me waiting
Oh, oh-oh I got a love that keeps me waiting
- Lonely Boy by The Black Keys

Those lines could very well be dedicated to a glass of fine whiskey and puff thereafter. ;)

Lane of Memories :: Need is a Want

Mandrake smashes his glass on the wall.

All your time is not your own
It's real hard to find out why
It's real hard to say good-bye
To move on down the line...

"Your memory is all that I have." He slurs. "Your memory is what I cherish, Your voice is the only melody, Your images I treasure so much."

Both your eyes wide open
You see the shape I'm in
It wasn't of my choosing
It's only bones and skin
And I will plead no contest
If loving you's a crime
So go on and find me guilty
Just one more fucking time

He pours another glass in the wee hours of the morning. Takes a sip. Stumbles across to the wall.

All your life is in your head
All you dreams are in your sleep
And if your dreams are hid too deep
They're just a waste of time
When you try to chase the dream
You never seem to know the time
You never recognize the signs
And nothing's what it seems

Smashes the glass again. Screams in Pain.

"Memory, Voice, Images." He pauses, waits for his tears to douse some of the anger.

All life is a mystery,
All things pass you by in time
All things just a perfect crime
It's just the way we are
All instincts let you down
It's not a case of love in vain
It's not a case of love insane
It's enough to break your heart

"I don't want you to be like her. I want her."

And so all our years together
Weren't worth a fucking dime
So go on and find me guilty
Just one more fucking time

The song playing in the background is 'One More Fucking Time' by Motorhead.

Anti-war

This whole anti-war theme is going on my mind, fueled by Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five. So a Google search led to another and I chanced upon a song.

Sam Stone by John Prine. Soulful. Left me speechless.

YouTube link

While listening, think what 'Sam Stone' depicts, think what the phrase 'Little pitchers have big ears' means. Words have an immense power. Voice is an intense way to express. Hats off John Prine.

Lyrics:

Sam Stone came home,
To his wife and family
After serving in the conflict overseas.
And the time that he served,
Had shattered all his nerves,
And left a little shrapnel in his knee.
But the morphine eased the pain,
And the grass grew round his brain,
And gave him all the confidence he lacked,
With a Purple Heart and a monkey on his back.

Chorus:
There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes,
Jesus Christ died for nothin' I suppose.
Little pitchers have big ears,
Don't stop to count the years,
Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios.
Mmm....

Sam Stone's welcome home
Didn't last too long.
He went to work when he'd spent his last dime
And Sammy took to stealing
When he got that empty feeling
For a hundred dollar habit without overtime.
And the gold rolled through his veins
Like a thousand railroad trains,
And eased his mind in the hours that he chose,
While the kids ran around wearin' other peoples' clothes...

Repeat Chorus:

Sam Stone was alone
When he popped his last balloon
Climbing walls while sitting in a chair
Well, he played his last request
While the room smelled just like death
With an overdose hovering in the air
But life had lost its fun
And there was nothing to be done
But trade his house that he bought on the G. I. Bill
For a flag draped casket on a local heroes' hill.

In a fish bowl...

This photo reminded me of the eternally beautiful song by Pink Floyd:

...We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl
Year after year

Running over the same old ground

What have we found?

The same old fears

Wish you were here...

A Song and a Sketch

Metallica is a household name. Well, almost! Or at least it would be from the generation here on! Most of us are born and brought up on Metallica. Most of you will agree on this. I have already spoken about my love for Metallica here, here and here.

In 1997, Metallica released the album ReLoad. That album had a song called Fixxxer. Beautiful song. One of the classic Bluesy Hard Rock style that Metallica adopted from their another good album Load. The song fits in with the other classics and my personal favourites like Bleeding Me, The Outlaw Torn and Thorn Within.

The song Fixxxer has some lovely lines:

Dolls of voodoo all stuck with pins
One for each of us and our sins
So you lay us in a line
Push your pins they make us humble
Only you can tell in time
If we fall or mearly stumble

...

Can you heal what father's done?
Or cut this rope and let us run?
Just when all seems fine
And I'm pain free
You jab another pin
Jab another pin in me

Now with these lines in mind, check the following sketch that Shreyas has drawn. It was done with pencil and paper. Beautiful picture and heartening, rather haunting, expressions.

This is one of my favourite sketches. I hope Shreyas keeps drawing such amazing sketches.

That's all i got to say.

Song Set 2

So here is the next set of 5 songs that are amongst my favourites:

1) Seahorse by Devendra Banhart - This is one of the most awesome slow tracks i have heard. Kinda psychedelic , slow rock. Banhart's voice is really incredible. The most amazing line from this song is: 'Well I'm scared of ever being born again, If it's in this form again.' A song that really goes well with the blues! Banhart does remind me of the Great Jim Morrison at times! I keep listening to this song.

2) Roads by Portishead - They call this type of music as TripHop. I don't know about the genre, but this band and some of their songs are just heady. What with the psychedelic music, beats and Beth Gibbons voice! A very enchanting combination.

3) Have Love Will Travel by The Sonics and The Black Keys (Sonics cover) - I heard the Black Keys version before. This is one fun song. Bluesy version by the Keys of the song that talks about going to meet your fancy. Later when I checked the Sonics version it was tough for me to decide which one is better. My inclination is towards the Sonics though. :) Rocking song.

4) Orion by Metallica - Everyone knows Metallica, so i wont waste a lot of time and space talking about the great band! This is an instrumental song, beautiful song! Kirk, Cliff, James and Lars make this song so profoundly surreal, especially the orgasmic solo. Its really superb!

5) Hurt by Nine Inch Nails and Johnny Cash (NIN cover) - Again i heard the Cash cover before the NIN version. Both songs are out of the world! While Cash makes the song human, NIN's version is dark and eerie. Awesome set of lyrics. Moving and Deep. An all time favourite song while floating in the abyss.

Music

Songs are a big big part of our lives. Most of us have a 24/7 audio player running in our mind. We shuffle across songs that totally grip our mind and feelings. Sometimes they help us pull ourselves up, sometimes they help us vent our anger… sometimes just makes us laugh by describing the irony that we are in… Our lives presented to us in tricky words and beautiful music.

I keep discovering bands and music. The World is a big gold mine for music. But I must say that the 60, 70 and 80's music is the best. The bands were the pioneers and they will always remain evergreen. I would like to talk about songs that I discover, bands that I discover while hunting for some song or the other. I love hunting for music.

While hunting around found some bands like The Black Keys, Rascal Flatts, Devendra Banhart, Blue Cheer, and many more. These bands have made the most amazing music that I loved a lot and has become a part and parcel of my audio player. ☺ And these are apart from the bands that we hear about a lot.

So I will keep posting about these amazing songs and bands. For now let me talk about 5 songs:

1) Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes - Amazing rock song, it is an anthem. When you are down and need a boost, it's the Seven Nation Army that you have to listen to.

2) No Aphrodisiac by The Whitlams - Very melodic, touching and soothing song. The perfect song to listen to when you are drunk on memories. The lines, "There is no aphrodisiac like loneliness; truth, beauty and a picture of you" are the most amazing lines I have heard. Get me a easy chair, a glass of scotch and my player with this song on and what I have is the simplest time machine!

3) Brazen (Weep) by Skunk Anansie - This is a very complex song, at least the lyrics are. I don't want to quote from any sites that talk about the meaning of this song. It's a song to hear and explore. The voice, the depth and the meaning.

4) Peace of Mind by Blue Cheer - Psychedelic rock at its best. What a song by Blue Cheer! One of my all time favourites!

5) Joker and the Thief by WolfMother - A Classic. Am sure most of you would know this song. I discovered this a bit late, but better late than never. This is one song that is going to be with me forever.

Ahh Metallica is Back!

Am waiting for Metallica's New Album 'Death Magnetic'... The song from the 'The Day That Never Comes' is released on their website. And it surely has got me excited. The song reminds the Good Old Metallica from Load, Metallica and some Ride the Lightning days.

The album also features Unforgiven 3! Now that has got me excited more then ever! A sequel to one of my favourite songs.... WOW!

I happily tell people that i am born and brought up with Metallica.... and so are million others of my generation... This band formed in 1981... Now why should i write the history... its all there on wikipedia... But yes... Formed Just two years before i was born... And it has gripped the world.... and they are back with what they are good with!

Wow! Am eagerly waiting for the album!

Mumbai

Yesterday i had to go to thane from dadar, the jam packed central line, where people hanging in the space between the train bogies is a common site. And there i was trying to find which is slow, which is the fast train.. finally i located a train which was starting from dadar, and it was full.

People hanging from the doors, a mumbaikar won't even look twice at them because its usual. But for me its always intimidating and marvelling both at the same time. Intimidating because of the risk and marvelling due to the tenacity of mumbaikars who travel daily in a similar fashion.

I let go two such overful locals!

finally boarded one which was full in the same manner but alteast i could get into it. This is a huge fast exodus. 30 seconds and about 50 people cram into a single bogie and mind you the people get down also in the same 30 seconds.. its maddening.

People push, some fall, luggage is thrown in different directions, fists might fly, shoulders might hit... no wonder we dont like rugby or american football so much... mumbaikars have to do this thing daily.. and yes even ladies have to! of course in the ladies compartment....

By the time i reached, which i found out was a slow train later on, it was already 10 pm. My crumpled shirt which i had forgotten to iron started straightening due to the pressure of people standing next to me. I know this sounds funny and yuck at the same time. Mumbaikars say that you can easily fall asleep without falling down in such full trains... :)

I attended the function and then again started on my way back... at around 12.20 am... Could not wait for long for a train taking me to dadar so took one which stops at Kurla (in between thane and dadar). Went to kurla and took the 12.51 am train to CST. 12.51 am and still quite a number of people in the train.. amazing mumbai.... it never sleeps... it just relaxes for a couple of hours.

I could have taken the cab back to Shivaji park from dadar station but it was 1.10 am and i felt like taking a walk to my room.

Mumbai in the night, taxi cabs along the road with drivers waiting for their fare, streetlights shining the streets polished clean by the heavy traffic, dogs lurking nearby barking occasionally, people like me travelling in the night... and silence.. which reminded me of the Simon n Garfunkel song - Sounds of Silence

Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence

Mumbai... its a pleasure to see it when its calm and peaceful.. just for a few hours of the early morning.. and then it gets back.. looking forward to another day!

Another day!!

All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places - worn out faces
Bright and early for their daily races
Going nowhere - going nowhere

I run towards the bus, the driver tells me not to board from the front... go back... i run to catch and then jump. Take a seat, catch a breath... and exhale myself out... reaching outside, absorbing, trying to fill in the hollow that is me...

an old lady waiting for the bus at the next bus stop, wrinkled face folding years of thoughts, years of feelings, hopes and experiences... memories.... now just waiting for a bus which will take her to another place....

two little kids playing on the street, their mother looking after her other two kids.... love...

a cow tied to a tree on the footpath and its owner selling grass to people who then feed the cow...

people running towards their work... towards the coming day...

i breathe in, see myself... all confused, all scattered thoughts... like a little kid playing the picture mosaic game and misplacing pieces.... the sun in the water... moon in the house.... kids on the clouds....

and i try to channelize.... thoughts which pace and run, and i like a boarder at a station see them like a train moving fast without stopping at my station... and then the next train....

all this while the song Mad World by Micheal Andrews is running in my mind... wonderful song... very touching.... and i run towards the new day....

Hello teacher tell me what's my lesson
Look right through me - look right through me

Vacation!

Want to write what i feel, but what comes out are some lines of some song.... there is always a song for a particular feeling or if not the words it is the strumming of a guitar or a solo which can be associated with an innermost feeling.

Either that or i am consumed by music and lyrics.

Where are my own words? On a Vacation?

When i need a vacation more, my expressions go on a vacation!

Giant Wheel

'Lost in the Romance...
...Wilderness and Pain...'

Jim sang with The Doors, the doors from the outside in - or the inside out!

The body, The heart, The mind and The soul.... as abstract as the transition from romance to wilderness and through the doors....

The body as a system runs then feeds the heart, the heart works on its own but feeds the body. A give and take... and inside outside... the mind the next layer, the next strata...helping us overcome the physicallity and go outside and take things inside... Feelings... outside in...

The soul... thats the mystery, The Pandora's box... it goes from inside out and returns back to the core... Who knows what it is... the name of this blog was born of the same question... What is it? Unknown?

A giant wheel in the fun fair of this stage... All the colours, fragrances and visions... all but roundess in revolutions... spectators... just gape and grasp...

The food, The aroma... The juice... The energy... What do they do?

They affect the body and then the heart... Mould the mind... Satisfy the soul... Roundess and fullness... revolutions... centrifugal or centripetal... outside in... inside out... abstractions...

Illusions... deceptions... facts... interveawing... leading to abstraction...

The Doors... the gateway... derailed... but on track... as abstract... as the compromised meanings..

'The blue bus is calling us..
driver where you taking us..'

The Doors... suggesting... encapsulating... in a chrysalis... and releasing into a mist of insanity... curt yet fully dissolved... naked open... and absorbing it all... unrelenting...

Anger at times shows a way towards sanity as easily as it breaks the fence and leads to the blue bus...

Where?

'Can you picture what will be
So limitless and free...'

How?

'Waiting for a strangers hand...
in a desperate land...'

Redundancy.... Repetitions.... Revolutions...
'Save me...Save us'

Pity... shame... stone....
Stoned to sing...

'Come on baby take a chance with us,
meet me at the end of the blue bus'
